Parenting is a difficult FULL TIME JOB!
Here are some ideas for your consideration:
As parents, you must try to show affection and respect for your spouse.
Your example will encourage your child to do the same.
You must be prepared to discipline your child if behavior is unacceptable.
Today’s society frowns upon physical discipline.
You must be consistent with correction. What was wrong yesterday is wrong today.
Look for opportunities to give praise for behavior so that discipline is required less often. Try the 1, 2, 3 method.
Number 1 is, “I see what your are doing and I don’t like it.”
Number 2 is, “Stop is or there will be consequences.” Believe me, this is a tried and true method!
Number 3 is the consequence. One good thing about this method is that it can be done silently with finger signals in public places like church or out of the house.
If your child is of school age, you must keep in touch with teachers and attend parent/teacher day so you know what’s REALLY going on. It is easier today since most school systems employ email addresses for ease in contacting.
Talk and listen to your child regularly. Regular communication is vital!
If you are divorced or live in different locations, don’t criticize your ex-partner when speaking to your child. Always keep your relationship with your children at the top of your communication.
Above all, be sure your child knows the reason for discipline. When things calm down, try to take time to discuss the incident and reassure your love for them.
