Empathy In The Family

The Curse of Overexplaining – Parent Like a Professional

Empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

An effective parent must try to understand the feelings of other family members.

The only way to emotionally reach your spouse or child is to empathize with them.

It is not enough to say, “I don’t understand him or her!”

This statement prevents you from having a loving relationship.

You can’t approach problems from only your point-of-view.

You must try to put yourself in the other person’s situation.

You can’t say, “You shouldn’t feel that way” because they DO feel that way!

Teenagers and preteens have a whole lot on their plate.

The last thing they need is a parent who doesn’t try to understand them.

This also applies to your spouse.

He or she is trying to accommodate the two different worlds of home and work.

So, empathy with your spouse can make for a happier home.

Try to practice empathy.

If not today, when?
