Do men about to marry ask permission of the woman’s father to do so?
I know it’s an old fashioned custom.
And in many cases it is a foregone conclusion that the answer is “yes.”
Yet, I look upon this long-standing custom as a sign of respect.
I remember going down in the basement of my girlfriend’s home.
Her father was at his workbench with his back turned to me.
I told him that I loved his daughhter and was asking for his permission to marry her.
He turned to face me while pointing his finger at me.
He said, “You’d better take goood care of her!”
I hope this tradition is alive and well in today’s world.
